Episode Summary
Q1: Place
If we could do a flypast on any part of the world that is significant to you, which place, city or country would it be and why?
The UK
Q2: Life
Give us a glimpse into your life story so far with an emphasis on what you are doing currently?
Grew up in Lancashire in a mill town and ended up getting into the University of Manchester which no-one thought I could or should or would. I became a lawyer and then went into banking, eventually working with Credit Suisse. Left there and went into business as part of the first dot com wave. I became a pioneer in the cloud space and ended up being an investor in tech, communications and telecoms. All this led to me being spotted by some researchers and a role on a secret millionaire programme which led to being a dragon on BBC's Dragon's Den. More recently, I've started companies again. One was a 3D mountain bike business called Atherton Bikes and another was Implement AI with the idea to help businesses, not just talk about AI but actually implement this technology.
Q3: Reset
Where on earth is your place or reset or re-charge?
On a mountain bike through a forest
Q4: Wonder
What wonder of the natural world excites you the most?
The ocean. The scale of it, the unknown, the power of it, the beauty of it.
Q5: Hopefulness
What is your story of hopefulness (not your own) about a person, business or non-profit who are doing amazing things for the world?
Charles black who is building a business called Sen.com. The idea is to deploy a constellation of satellites around Earth which will enable access to a 4k view of the Earth in real time. Charles wants to democratise space.
Q6: Insight
As we prepare to re-enter, what insight, wisdom or question would you like to share with us?
I think as you move in from this overview effect, you've got your continent, your country, and then your locality, neighbourhood, local community, and start thinking about the people with whom you live with and who you impact with your own actions. If we all have these incrementally small overview effects, I think the world would be a better place.
