Episode Summary
Q1: Place
If we could do a flypast on any part of the world that is significant to you, which place, city or country would it be and why?
Lake Baikal in Siberia, the largest fresh water lake in the world.
Q2: Life
Give us a glimpse into your life story so far with an emphasis on what you are doing currently?
I have built a career, guiding people through some of the world's most remote and hostile places such as Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Congo, as well as doing lots of solo expeditions. The big focus for me has always been seeking out those most remarkable, most breathtaking corners of the world and having big adventures there which has led me to what I'm doing right now. A project came to mind about a decade ago, but over recent years, I've decided to give it a go. It is the biggest boldest expedition called the Ultimate seven project. A world first goal to journey from the lowest point in each continent to the highest, entirely by human power. So that is seven separate expeditions over seven continents which will be a multi year project that will take me through 20 countries and 13,000 miles by human power.
Q3: Reset
Where on earth is your place or reset or re-charge?
The mountains where there is no place for ego.
Q4: Wonder
What wonder of the natural world excites you the most?
Socotra brings me a lot of wonder in terms of the natural world. it's a Yemeni island in the Red Sea. It is known as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean. We think of Yemen as this kind of war torn country but off its coast, you've got this pristine Island, unique flora and fauna found nowhere else on earth, cave systems which has never been explored, mountains which haven't been climbed and reefs which have never been fully explored and dived.
Q5: Hopefulness
What is your story of hopefulness (not your own) about a person, business or non-profit who are doing amazing things for the world?
I've had the privilege of guiding all kinds of people from all walks of life on expeditions and adventures around the world. And there was one person a few years ago, who I guided in northern Iraq and he was by far the happiest person I've ever met. The thing was, he was an 85 year old guy who had terminal cancer.
Q6: Insight
As we prepare to re-enter, what insight, wisdom or question would you like to share with us?
A quote from John Milton in Paradise Lost. 'The mind is its own place, and in itself / Can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven'.
